Di Grassi predicts tire wear could decide race
Under heat of 30oC, the Brazilian Stock Car Series held this Saturday (18) the qualifying session for the seventh round of the season. The high temperature and abrasive track of the Orlando Moura International Autodrome in Campo Grande (MS) formed the most feared combination for team’s tire management along the race promising a strategy-based racing on Sunday. The event is a double header with races starting at 12 o’clock and 1:05pm at local time.
“The tires will be the deciding factor,” said Lucas Di Grassi of the Hero Motorsport team, who will start from fifth position. “Tomorrow the weather may be even hotter than today and we will race just after noon. So it will be very important to save the tires. It will be important to manage the tire wear and to know when one can force the pace. So one will avoid further damage to the tires, “said the Hero driver who, in his first full season in the series, has already won two victories.
Di Grassi fought for pole and placed himself among the six contenders in Q3 – the final phase of the qualifying. “Our car was not perfect but I think we got a great result – considering also that the qualifying session was very competitive,” commented the Hero Motorsport driver. “It was a nice day for us, but most important will be tomorrow’s result and, from this point of view, I’m very optimistic about the team’s work. I think we have a chance to win in either race. We are on the right track, “said Lucas, who in previous victories in the Stock Car series started from fifth (Curitiba) and fourth (Londrina).
