Lucas was a keynote speaker at the Web Summit, one of the world’s leading technology forums
Protagonist of a great season in 2018, Lucas Di Grassi had his work recognized in the 22nd edition of the Golden Helmet, Brazil’s national motor sport more traditional award. Lucas was the most voted in the press as the best driver in the Formula E category, crowning a campaign that saw the Brazilian become runner-up after a dramatic recovery. Di Grassi was taken off the track by a persistent technical problem in the first four rounds and was among the last placed almost midway through the season, something that was a huge disadvantage in such a competitive championship.
The F-E 2017 champion resurfaced with full strength, made the best campaign of the second half of the championship, set the incredible record of seven consecutive podiums, definitively placing himself as the most important name in history of the F-E world championship. Di Grassi now has a championship title (2017), a vice (2018) and two third places (2015 and 2016).
Lucas, however, could not attend the event held in Sao Paulo in early November. After attending the official Audi press conference at the International Motor Show in Sao Paulo on the eve of the awards, Lucas embarked for Spain, where the next day he performed tests with a Roborace model, the new series which will put side by side on the track human racing drivers and cars endowed with artificial intelligence.
On the same day, while on a plane to Lisbon, Di Grassi was named by the Brazilian national press as the winner of the Golden Helmet. In Portugal, Lucas spoke at the Web Summit, one of the biggest technology events of today, with the presence of more than 2,400 press professionals and 70 thousand specialists from the main technology centers in the world. At this meeting, Di Grassi detailed the current status of Roborace cars and explained how technology will impact both the sport and everyday life of ordinary drivers within a few years.
“This has been an incredible year. And the recognition of the Brazilian press not only makes me happier but also stronger for next season, “said Lucas. “I thank everyone who voted for me in the Golden Helmet. And also the fans who cheered and voted for me on Formula E’s FanBoost and Brazilian Stock Car Series’ FanPush. It is very special to win races like myself and the Audi Sport Abt Scheffler and Hero Motorsport teams did in Formula E and Stock Car this year. But it’s a unique feeling to know that people recognize you and support you. Thank you all. Happiness, gratitude and excitement are the words that sum up this season for me, “added Lucas, who also is performing the best debut season in the Brazilian Stock Car Series all current drivers. Di Grassi has already recorded three victories.
This is the fifth Golden Helmet won by Lucas Di Grassi in the vote of the specialized journalists. In the categories he competed in the awards, always according to the evolution of his career, the Formula E world champion also had the honour in 2007, 2008, 2016 and 2017. Lucas was still Silver Helmet in 2015 and Bronze in 2010. Last year, the organization honoured Di Grassi, named the best Brazilian driver abroad in the last decade, with the Special Senna Helmet and the Special Helmet Sid Mosca.
Di Grassi’s schedule in November has been quite hectic. Among other off-track engagements, in addition to the presentation in Lisbon, Lucas also gave lectures at the Symposium of Electric Vehicles of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in São Paulo, at the New Mobility of the São Paulo Auto Show and the Forum promoted by 4Rodas magazine – the main automobile specialized publication in Brazil. Di Grassi will also speak at the convention of the Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Distributors and the Berlin Tech Crunch, another world-leading event in the technology segment, to be held later this month in Germany.
